![]() | Rescue Me ID: 14-02-04-00084Fannie (female)
The vet tells us that Fannie is 3 years old, but she certainly acts a lot younger than that! Perhaps she's just never had a chance to be a sweet puppy. She loves to give kisses and is very playful, but also enjoys a good snuggle on the sofa. She gets along well with her foster sisters Lucy and Stella, though sometimes she's a bit too rambunctious for our old girl, Stella. Fannie is learning how to walk on a lead and has pretty much got the potty outside thing down cold. Due to her playfulness, she stays in the crate when left alone for long periods of time to ensure she chews only on her toys. She is sometimes submissive around her foster ... Mavis is a beautiful little beagle girl who was picked up in the middle of a Kentucky lake by a fisherman who surmised that she must have been thrown off a nearby bridge. You'd think there would be a more humane way of getting rid of an unwanted dog, wouldn't you? At any rate, we posted Mavis on Facebook and an adopter stepped forward right away, but after only two weeks in her new home, it was decided that Mavis' energy level was just too much for their 17 year old blind and deaf dachshund. She did nothing wrong. She's just too young and energetic to be a companion to a very senior dog. So, we are right back to square one. Mavis needs a ... (Read More)home NOW, be it a foster home or adoptive one. She is a very sweet, loving girl. She's also still a puppy. You can expect puppy behavior. She may chew inappropriate things. She may dig holes in your yard or unstuff your sofa. She'll learn house manners through patient, steadfast, loving encouragement. Can you help Mavis find the life she deserves? ![]() | Rescue Me ID: 14-01-16-00134Barnabas (male)
Barney is a Black and Tan Coonhound that came to us around Christmas time and was an immediate crowd favorite. He has a great disposition. He loves to play and socialize with other dogs and has shown no aggression toward any dog or person. He has interacted with both large and small dogs and has done phenomenally well with both (very gentle with the smaller ones). He loves to be loved and babied by his two-legged friends. He loves attention and likes to nuzzle his nose in your lap to soak up your pets and scratches. He has a super soft coat and sheds very little. We have yet to see him interact with cats or children, but believe he would do ... (Read More)well with kids. If he is anything like other coonhounds, cats may fall under the 'prey' rather than 'friend' category, but he could surprise us. Although it doesn't appear he had much interaction with toys, he has grown to love chasing and playing fetch with a ball. He was initially mildly protective of the ball. He gives a bark if another dog has it and he wants it, but has never snapped or bitten. After a short while, he has come to learn how to share with others. He has a good appetite and has not shown any food aggression, even when eating at his foster home around other hounds. Barney has good energy and would fit in well an energetic young household that has a yard with a fence or one that would provide him with regular walks, trips to the dog park, or day care. He is house broken and lets you know when he needs to go outside. He sleeps well through the night in a dog bed in the master bedroom at home. While at the kennel, he did great with a bed and a blanket. He has not had formal training, but knows how to sit and would likely be a fairly quick learner. Barney is truly a great dog and will make a great companion for someone, or a lucky family! (Less) Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland, Inc. Charles County La Plata, MD MAP IT!

Suzie was rescued from a Virginia shelter. She has known her share of neglect in her life and has the hernias, growths, and bad teeth to prove it. ![]() | Rescue Me ID: 14-01-16-00121Jasper (male)
This very handsome boy with the beautiful markings is also quite sick. Jasper is infected with heartworm. Surrendered to the shelter by his family citing financial difficulties, Jasper will indeed take quite a bit of money to put back into good health. (Gosh, it would have been so much cheaper to give him heartworm preventative from the get-go). Jasper has just arrived in rescue, so we don't know him well, but he is very calm for one so young. It might be the heartworm talking - or it may just be his nature, but so far he has been a pleasure to have in the house. He likes people, and is a bit submissive with them. He does nothing to incite ... (Read More)the ire of the resident hounds. He eats with finesse (note that that bowl in the photo has not been picked clean, yet his nose isn't in it). He rides in the car like a dream, and behaved himself so well at his temporary rest stop, that the resident human went out and left him uncrated with unfettered access to the entire house. She came back to find nothing amiss. He had merely switched beds in her absence. Jasper likes toys, and we once saw him walk across the room, pick up a toy, take it back to his bed, curl up with it and fall soundly asleep. We know he sounds too good to be true - and he is. Jasper must be heartworm negative before going to his permanent digs, so you'll have to wait until March to take him home. He'll be worth the wait. (Less) Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland, Inc. ![]() | Rescue Me ID: 14-01-03-00413Gabriel (male)
Gabriel was the first-born of Angel Charles, making his appearance well after dinner on Thanksgiving night. He has the most white markings of his siblings. Beagle puppies are born black and white. We expect him to be tri-color like his mom. Gabriel will be staying with his mom until 8 weeks of age and will not be adopted out until he has been neutered. It's hard to look past the cute face, but rest assured that adopting a puppy is not for the faint of heart. They require as much diligence as a human baby to keep them (and your belongings) out of harm's way. Puppies require loving patience (never physical discipline) as they learn what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Gabriel will not always be young, healthy, and cute. He will one day be gray around his eyes, may limp with arthritis, and need long-term medications. He needs a family that will be committed to him for his ENTIRE life, which will likely be 14-15 years or more. If you are interested in adopting Gabriel, you may submit an application now, but we WILL NOT allow him to go to his new home until he is weaned and neutered in February. Preference will be given to those with puppy experience, and we discourage the placement of puppies in apartments due to the noise and activity level of young dogs. Your neighbors will thank us. Maximus is a beautiful, intelligent, healthy, sweet, and loving beagle boy. He is around 1-2 years of age, but is quite calm for this stage in his life. He does like to race out the door, telling all the prey that he is on the way, but inside he is as quiet as a church mouse. He has a very big and beautiful voice for his trip out the door and to the yard, but settles down quickly once he has reached his destination. He doesn't waste his time or energy barking at folks passing the house, and in fact will return to the deck when his siblings start to bark. He doesn't really see the need for all the commotion just because someone is in the next ... (Read More)yard or passing the house. He doesn't usually dig in the yard and rarely chews on inappropriate items. He has taken a liking to the chew toys lying around the house and will pick one up on occasion to entertain himself. He is crate trained and uses the dog door which he learned to use after one training session and by watching his siblings. He is good about going to the bathroom outside, except when it is out of his control. The change in diet when he arrived at our home caused some digestive problems for Max, but that issue is resolved now and he is doing well on the house training project. We have yet to begin any additional training, but hope to start on 'sit' soon. Max should make a great student since he is very food-oriented. Right now, he is very good about coming when called, but doesn't come every time. He definitely needs someone to take the time and expend some energy to help him learn how to be a good pet. I believe he may have been a hunting dog in his past life. He hails from Georgia, and has made a long trip to find a loving home. He is a medium sized dog at 37 pounds. He is not fat, and carries his weight well. Although he is not a lapdog, he dearly loves to be near to his human companions. We have not seen any aggression from Max for either canine or human beings. He loves attention and will go out of his way for some petting and, of course, treats. We think that Max will do well as an only dog living with a family that adores him. We have only seen Max with older children at an adoption event, but he was very gentle in his interactions with them. He currently lives with eight other dogs, so if you are looking for a second dog, don't cross Max off your list. He does interact and play with his siblings once in a while. I believe that Max is really looking for a home with or without a canine playmate that will love him unconditionally and will take very good care of him for the rest of his life. If you have such a home, please stop by and meet Maximus Washington. (Less) Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland, Inc. Charles County La Plata, MD MAP IT!

Penelope is a small, sweet, smart, and lovable beagle girl. She is confident and adventuresome in most situations, but does show some shyness if loud voices or noises startle her. She was a family pet in her previous life, but when her family moved, they left her and her Jack Russell sibling behind to fend for themselves. The neighbors took care of the little lost dogs for a while and then called animal control. BRSM found her in a southern VA shelter and brought her north to find a loving family that will include her as a valuable and permanent family member. That is how little Penelope ended up staying with us while looking for a home. ... (Read More)She doesn't seem particularly picky about the people with whom she associates. She likes people in general and she will roll on her back for a good belly rub. She knows that she is irresistible and deserves their attention, and expects to be given lots of love. She gets along well with other dogs, but will give a little warning growl if they try to share her food. She is not particularly fond of being left behind and will call out to make sure that people are still around. We know the reason for that insecurity, but I would by no means say that she has separation anxiety. She is a very well-adjusted young lady. She is crate trained, and will often go in her crate in the evening to rest while we watch TV. She responds well to her name and usually comes when called. She is doing well with house training, and is getting the idea that the great outdoors is the place to go potty. However, she does not like the rain or getting her feet wet and prefers not to go outside during a shower. She taught herself to use the dog door by watching the current canine residents go through it. She is very quiet and does not bark at little critters or people passing the house. Often the barking of her foster siblings seems to scare her and she heads for the porch. She isn't much of a digger either, so your yard would be safe with Penelope in residence. She does get bored sometimes and will chew on inappropriate items such as a dog pillow zipper or a throw rug. We are trying to substitute appropriate items such as chew toys when she gets the chewing urge. She is taking a passing interest in the toys now, but when she arrived at our home, her teeth were in such bad condition that she was having trouble chewing. She has had her teeth cleaned with several extractions and now picks up the chew toys once in a while to pass the time. She is very healthy and is not on any medication other than heart worm preventative. She has a slight heart murmur, but it doesn't affect her everyday life. She is basically a very calm and reserved girl that tries to please. If she thinks that she has caused you to be upset with her, she crouches to the floor and tries to make herself very small. This is a reflection of her past treatment. Penelope would love a home with patient and caring parents that will not abandon her and will promise to take good care of her for the rest of her life. She might like the company of another resident dog, but I think she would be fine as an only dog. She seems to like children when we go out in public and shows only a passing interest in our cat. I think a fenced yard would make her happy so she can meander and explore. Penelope has a lot of love to give to the person or people who love her. Dodson is another down on his luck beagle for whom life has been so hard that the vet had a hard time aging him. Dodson is an underweight 24 pounds and has cataracts which affect his vision. He was a little nervous coming from the shelter environment (and heaven knows what else) and it may take a little time for him to learn to trust. Maple is not quite ready for adoption. We know that she is good with other dogs and children. She's a little leggier than a beagle, but has that friendly, happy beagle disposition. She is fairly laid back, and told us that if she never sees the inside of a shelter again, it will be too soon. Shockingly (written with deep sarcasm), Maple is heartworm positive. Heartworm, left untreated, is a deadly disease. She will be ready for adoption once she is completely healthy. Stay tuned for updates! Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland, Inc. Sammy was led to his foster mom's home by a neighbor who thought he might belong there. There is always a beagle or two in residence, so it was a natural assumption. Sammy is one lucky boy! This down-on-his-luck fellow was led straight to a beagle lover and long-time BRSM foster! Divine interference? We like to think so! First things first, Sammy was given a good meal and clean water, after which he slept for a solid 24 hours. Whatever his ordeal, this poor guy was exhausted! When he finally woke up, he was discovered to be covered with ticks, emaciated, and suffering from torn pads on his feet. No mark on his neck indicated that he had ... (Read More)never worn a collar. A long bath in dish detergent (to make the ticks back out and not leave a head embedded) ensued, and through it all, Sammy was grateful to be held and have some loving attention. Sammy is a very loving, affectionate beagle and would most likely spend the day in your lap if you let him. He walks well on a leash, but doesn't like to turn around and go back. Therefore, his foster mom takes him on a circular route and Sammy always seems surprised when he ends up at where he started. His foster mom says he looks at her and seems to say, 'How'd you do that?' Sammy is gentle and has shown no aggression with other dogs or with his food. He's a 15' beagle and currently weighs 26 pounds, but needs to gain some weight. Housetraining is in progress, but Sammy is smart and we expect he'll have proper house manners before too long. Sammy has lots of energy, so don't let his age fool you. He has been completely vetted, but has heartworm. He will be ready for adoption when treatment is complete. Sammy is an absolute love and it will be a lucky family who takes him home. (Less) Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland, Inc. Charles County La Plata, MD MAP IT!

This cute little girl came to us from Maryland's Eastern Shore. She landed in a shelter after being hit by a car. The shelter recognized that her chances for adoption were slim, even though her personality was stellar. So, here she is...heartworm positive, Lyme positive...AND because that's not enough, the impact of being struck by a car dislocated/separated her shoulder. Eddie is a very calm, sweet, patient, and playful beagle boy. He is a little shy in new situations and with new people, but absolutely loves to be the center of attention. He will stay close if you wish to pet him and tell him just how wonderful he is. However, he is fearful of loud noises and voices and will crouch down and try to make himself very small in response to either. He is a submissive fellow and never pushes to the front of the line, even if food is involved. He quietly waits in his crate for his food bowl and waits his turn when treats are handed out. He does not have an aggressive bone in his body towards people or other dogs. ... (Read More)He loves to run and play with his siblings in the back yard. His siblings are of various sizes, and Eddie is equally gentle to each of them during play. In fact, when playing with the smallest, he often rolls on his back so she can jump on him and bite his ears. He never gets mad or aggressive during play. He truly enjoys the company of all. The shelter said that Eddie was fine with cats as well. He is a happy boy with a special spring in his step. Eddie prances as he trots around the yard, checking out all of his favorite places. Eddie is crate-trained and often retires to a crate during the evening to sleep. He is learning his name and to come when called. The house-training is a work in progress, but he is getting the idea. We have not yet started other training, but Eddie, like most beagles, is very food oriented, so he should train rather easily. He is not much of a barker. When his siblings run to the fence to announce to the world that a bunny, squirrel, or human with or without a dog is passing the house, Eddie just watches or runs back to the porch. He does not dig in the yard or garden. He is a powerful chewer, and often seeks out a durable toy for his chewing pleasure. While tall enough to counter-surf, Eddie does not seem interested in that particular sport. Eddie needs some work with leash-walking. It can be challenging if he is being walked with another dog. They can work in tandem to wrap you up. He does not seem to have any issues when traveling in a car, and can accompany you on your vacations. He is a medium-energy dog who understands that days are for playing, evenings are for unwinding, and nights are for sleeping. He is a great companion for both humans and dogs. His perfect home will have a securely-fenced yard and another non-aggressive dog with whom to play. He would undoubtedly love to go on walks and just be with his human. He will return the love he receives ten-times over. If you are looking for a gentle soul to share your life, please come by and see Eddie. (Less) Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland, Inc. Toby seems to be a little timid, and he reacts to strange dogs by barking. It is most likely a fear response since he doesn't bark at the other guys sharing his home. He does interact with the boys to some extent, but often tries to dominate them as opposed to simply playing with them. At times, he likes to be the center of attention being showered with rubs, hugs and kisses, and other times he retires to his crate for extended quiet time. During this period, he stays in his crate and doesn't come out even though the crate door is open and we call to him. Toby is a healthy guy, but does have a very mild heart murmur. Grady has lots of energy and plays like a puppy, at times racing around the yard with his foster brother and sister. He doesn't have a confrontational bone in his body and agrees to let his bullying sister have her way if she is in one of those moods. His foster parents have not been too pushy with training him, as they are concentrating more on his health issues, but they feel that he is improving with every passing day. He takes Benadryl to help control his allergies, is getting a fatty acid supplement added to his diet to help with his skin and hair. (You can see by the photos that the hair on his nose is growing back.) He could still ... (Read More)stand to gain a few pounds. Still, through all the poking and prodding at the vet he remains unprovoked and continues to be a good sport about it all. He's curious ('Hey, what's that I smell on the table?'), absolutely loves other dogs, people, and cats (if they don't swat his nose). He hates to go out in the rain, but is learning that outside is THE place to go potty. He knows what treats and rawhides are for and sleeps in a small ball on a pillow in the bedroom. Overall he is a great little guy that deserves a comfortable loving home of his own either with or without canine siblings (although his foster mom does feel like at least one dog to chase might be perfect for him). Grady has a heart valve problem that causes him to have a heart murmur. He takes medication used in humans for hypertension. (Less) Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland, Inc. Maggie is a BRSM alumni who is a victim of this leaden economy. Adopted from us in 2009, she has been the happy sister of Morgan for the last three years. Sadly, their mom can no longer afford to care for them. Maggie is playful, curious, submissive, walks well on a leash, and gets very excited about riding in the car. Maggie loves to please and really loves to play with other dogs. She is potty trained, crate trained, and obedience trained. Though Maggie loves chew toys like Kong balls and Milk-bone biscuit holders, she is not an excessive chewer of inappropriate items. She also does not bark or dig excessively. Maggie is cautious, and ... (Read More)needs time/patience to warm up, but once she is comfortable with a routine, she is quite sweet and friendly. Maggie enjoys being outside and being rewarded for executing commands (like 'sit' or 'come'). She also loves to play in the laundry. Maggie is a robust athlete, so her new family will need to have a secure fence and the commitment to use a good leash every time Maggie leaves the house. Maggie is sometimes apprehensive around small children, but will let them pet her if they are very gentle. (Less) Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland, Inc. Charles County La Plata, MD MAP IT!

This beautiful little girl is an absolute sweetheart. Lively, but gentle and curious, she is happy to be out of that terrifying shelter and into the relative calm of a foster home. She loves to get out in the yard where the smells are so enticing. Bianca is very friendly. Her tail goes a mile a minute when she's shown some friendly attention. Might you be able to offer her a forever home? Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland, Inc. Charles County La Plata, MD MAP IT!
